Format & exportPro plan

Format your book once, export it as often as you need

Choose a trim size, theme and fonts, fix what preflight finds, and export a print-ready PDF, an EPUB or a DOCX. Formatting costs 200 credits per book, once.

From manuscript to files

Format & export works on the book in your library, so the text you format is always the text you last saved.
  1. Choose the page size

Choose a page size between 5×8 and 8.5×11 inches, including 6×9. Use the size you'll select at your printer or store.

  2. Choose a theme and fonts

Set the overall look of the interior with a theme, then choose the fonts for the book.

  3. Switch matter on or off

Front and back matter, such as the copyright page, a dedication or an about-the-author page, each have a switch. Include what the book needs and leave out the rest.

  4. Run preflight and export

Preflight checks the book before export and links each issue to the place where you fix it. Then export the files you need.

Files and checks

One book, several outputs, all made from the same source text.
  • Print-ready PDF

An interior PDF at your trim size, with the theme, fonts and matter you chose. Pro plan.

  • EPUB for ebook stores

A reflowable ebook file made from the same book, so print and ebook editions match. Pro plan.

  • DOCX for editors

A Word file to share with an editor, a co-author or another tool. Available from the Plus plan.

  • Spine width, calculated

For paperbacks, the spine width is worked out from the page count and the paper you choose, ready for the wrap cover.

  • Preflight linked to fixes

Each item preflight finds comes with a link to where it can be fixed, so you're not searching the book for it.

  • Out-of-date exports flagged

Edit the text after exporting and the earlier files are marked out of date, so an old file is easy to spot before you upload it.

Which export does what

Priced per book, not per export

Formatting costs 200 credits per book, charged once. After that, exporting the same book again is free, however many times you do it. That matters because books keep changing after the first export: a reader spots a typo, an editor sends late notes, or you add a new also-by page when the next book comes out.

When the text changes after an export, AIBookWriter marks the earlier files as out of date. Export again and the new files reflect the current manuscript, at no extra cost.

Preflight runs before every export and lists anything that needs attention. Each item links to the place where it can be fixed, so you can work down the list instead of scrolling through the whole book looking for the problem.

For paperbacks, the cover has to wrap around the spine, and the spine's width depends on the page count and the paper. Format calculates it from your book, so the wrap cover is sized for the interior that will actually be printed.

Print-ready PDF and EPUB export are part of the Pro plan. DOCX export is available from Plus, and every plan, including Free, can export a Markdown copy of everything you write. See pricing for the plans.

Common formatting jobs

  • A print-on-demand paperback

Export the interior PDF at your trim size and use the calculated spine width for the wrap cover.

  • An ebook release

Export an EPUB from the same book, so the ebook and paperback editions say the same thing.

  • A picture book with bleed

Visual books export print PDFs with bleed, so illustrations can run to the edge of the page.

  • Corrections after launch

Fix a typo in the manuscript and export both files again, free, once the book's formatting is paid for.

Frequently asked questions

What does formatting cost?

200 credits per book, charged once. After a book's formatting is paid for, every re-export of that book is free, including after edits. Credits come from your plan's monthly allowance: Plus includes 1,000 a month, Pro 5,000 and Ultra 25,000. The price is shown before you confirm.

Which plan do I need?

Print-ready PDF and EPUB export are part of the Pro plan and Ultra. DOCX export is available from the Plus plan. Every plan, including Free, can export a Markdown copy of everything you've written, so your text is never locked in. Ultra includes everything in Pro. See pricing for the current plans.

Which trim sizes are available?

Page sizes run from 5×8 inches up to 8.5×11 inches, including the widely used 6×9. Check which sizes your printer or store supports before choosing, and select the same size when you set up the print edition there, because the interior PDF and the spine width are built for it.

What does preflight do?

Preflight looks over the book before you export and lists anything that would cause trouble in the files. Each item links straight to the place where it can be fixed, so you can work through the list, then run preflight and export again when it's clear.

What happens if I edit the book after exporting?

Your earlier exports are marked out of date as soon as the text changes, so you can see at a glance that a file no longer matches the manuscript. Export again to get current files. Because formatting is paid once per book, re-exports cost nothing.

Does formatting include the cover?

Format calculates the spine width from the page count and paper, which is what a paperback wrap cover needs, and builds the full wrap with back, spine and front. The front cover itself comes from the Metadata & cover step. See the book cover generator page.
