Write and revise chapters with AI

Generate chapters from your outline, choose a model tier, compare new drafts with your own text, and write the remaining chapters in one batch.

Write chapters is where the outline becomes prose. This guide covers generating chapters, steering drafts and revising without ever losing text. The step opens once your outline has at least one chapter.

Step 1: Find your way around

The screen has three columns:

  • Chapters on the left, with each chapter’s word count or status.
  • The manuscript in the middle, with a formatting toolbar, a live word count, and a save indicator next to the chapter title.
  • The assistant on the right: the writing controls, then three tabs — AI edits, Plan and History.

Step 2: Check the plan before you generate

Open the Plan tab. It shows the chapter’s summary, its beats and the line it should end on, with Edit the outline → to change them. Chapters are written from this card, so a vague card gives a vague chapter. If it’s thin, add two or three specific beats first.

Step 3: Choose a model tier

Pick one of the three tiers, each labeled with its price per chapter:

  • Swift — 15 credits; fast drafts for first passes and genre fiction.
  • Balanced — 20 credits; stronger structure and continuity across chapters.
  • Literary — 30 credits; the richest prose and subtext, and slower.

You can switch tiers from chapter to chapter.

Step 4: Generate the chapter

Add a Direction for this draft if you want something specific — “open on the morning after the storm”, “stay close to Theo in the second half” — then press Generate chapter. The line underneath shows the price and your balance afterward.

The text appears as it’s written. You can leave the page: the chapter keeps going, and its library card shows “Working in the background”. To cancel, press Stop in the progress banner. If a generation fails, the credits come back automatically.

Step 5: Read and edit

When the chapter lands, edit it directly. The toolbar has bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, heading, subheading, quote, bulleted and numbered lists, scene break, undo and redo. Changes save on their own, and the indicator shows Saved. If it shows Not saved — retry, click it once you’re back online.

Step 6: Ask for a new draft

To try a chapter again, press Generate a new draft — the button’s name once a chapter has text. Your current text is kept. When the draft is ready, a banner says “A new AI draft of this chapter is ready. Your text has not been changed.”

  • Compare opens the new draft so you can read it.
  • Use the draft makes it the chapter’s text. The version it replaces stays in History.

Step 7: Write the remaining chapters in one batch

On Plus and above, when more than one outlined chapter is still empty, the chapter list shows Write N empty chapters with the total price. Confirm, and the credits for the whole batch are reserved. Chapters are written in order, each continuing from the one before, and saved as they finish. Press Stop at any point and you pay only for the chapters already written.

Step 8: Deal with flagged chapters

If you change the outline or a character after a chapter is written, the chapter gets a warning icon in the list and a note above its text. Regenerate it, edit it by hand, or keep it as it is. In the outline, The chapter still fits — clear the flag removes the warning.

Step 9: Revise passages with AI edits

For smaller changes, use AI edits rather than a full redraft: select a passage, choose Edit with AI, and describe what should change. Each request costs 5 credits on Plus and above, and you accept or reject every suggestion. The guide to AI edits and version history covers this in detail.

Tips

  • Generate chapters in order. Each chapter reads recaps of the chapters before it and the end of the previous one, so writing chapter 7 before chapter 6 loses that continuity.
  • On the Free plan, the AI writes chapter 1 and Plus writes the rest. You can always write chapters yourself, at no cost.
  • If a chapter runs long or short, adjust Target words on its outline card before generating again.

Try it as you read

Open AIBookWriter in another tab and follow along with your own book. The Free plan starts with 100 credits.
