Amazon Best Sellers Rank

Amazon Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is the number shown under “Product details” on an Amazon product page. It compares a product’s sales with every other product in the same store (the Kindle Store for ebooks, Books for print) and also shows its rank in a few categories. The lower the number, the stronger the recent sales: #1 is the top seller.

Amazon describes its bestseller rankings as updated hourly and based on both recent and historical sales, with recent sales counting for more. It doesn’t publish the exact formula.

Why it matters for indie authors

BSR is a quick read on momentum. It helps you:

  • see whether a launch, newsletter feature or ad campaign moved sales, and for how long
  • compare your book with others in a category before you choose that category
  • spot when sales are slipping and a book might need attention

The top-selling product in a category can also show a “#1 Best Seller” badge on its page.

Each format ranks on its own: your Kindle edition in the Kindle Store, your paperback in Books. Free downloads during a promotion count toward Amazon’s free bestseller lists, not toward the paid rank.

Example

Say a new cozy mystery ranks around #9,000 in the Kindle Store, and #60 in one of its categories, in its first week. The morning after the author’s newsletter goes out, the store rank improves to about #2,500 and the category rank to #12. Over the next ten days, with no new promotion, both numbers drift back. The pattern tells her the newsletter reached buyers and roughly how long the effect lasted. It can’t tell her how many copies she sold; her KDP reports do that.

Common mistakes

  • Converting rank into sales. Rank depends on how every other book is selling at the same time. For your own numbers, use your KDP reports.
  • Checking it every hour. It moves with single sales, especially further down the list. Watch trends over days and weeks.
  • Comparing across stores. A Kindle Store rank and a Books rank are on different scales.
  • Choosing a category only for an easy badge. A badge in a category that doesn’t fit brings readers who won’t enjoy the book.
  • Reading rank as a verdict on quality. It reflects sales, not reviews or craft.
